C. English: The Olympics bring feuding countries together every two years for great friendly competition. In 1894 Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The committee’s goal was to organize the first Olympic Games of modern times. The first games took place in 1896 beginning a tradition that has lasted over a century. The winter event that interests me the most in the half-pipe. The Olympics are great because it brings countries together and the half-pipe is my favorite winter event because it is fun to watch and it takes a lot of skill. First the Olympic Games bring countries together. The first modern Olympics were in 1896. The first Olympic games were only two years after the International Olympic Committee was founded (about.com). The first modern Olympics were in Athens, Greece. They had the games in Athens because that is where the ancient Olympics took place (multimedia.olympic.org). The Olympics became reinstated because the founder of the IOC, Pierre de Coubertin, thought that exercise and sports made someone a well-rounded and vigorous person. So he proposed the idea to countries around the world (about.com). The first modern Olympics were open to all with 245 participants from 14 different countries. In the first games of 1896 only male participants were allowed (multimedia.olympic.org). The awards were gold, silver, and bronze medals. The first gold medal winner was James Connolly of the United States with a jump of 13.71 meters. Silver went to Alexandre Tufferi of France with a jump of 12.70 meters and bronze went to Ioannis Persakis of Greece with a jump of 12.52 meters (olympics.org). When Coubertin revived the Olympic Games, only summer sports were included. In the1920’s snow and ice sports began to soar in popularity. A number of IOC members decided to react to this new phenomenon. In 1924, it was decided to hold an International Winter Sports Week in Chamonix, France and 258 athletes from 16 countries mainly in Europe and North America attended (nostos.com). The Olympics let fuding countries come together and have fun. Second, my favorite winter sport is the half-pipe. The half-pipe is my favorite winter sport because it is fun to watch and it takes skill and years of practice to do the tricks they do. Shaun White is my favorite half-pipe athlete. The US practices in Colorado in the Rocky Mountains. Colorado is home to the most Ski and Snowboard lodges in the US (olympic.org). The US or Canada is predicted to win in the 2014 winter games. The US has Shaun White who won the Gold in 2010, but Canada always has many good contenders in the winter games (about.com). Shaun White of the US has the record of 48.3 out of 50, which was set in the 2010 Vancouver games. The half-pipe is judged not timed or measured (multimedia.olympics.com). The chances of the US getting in the top three spots are good. The main reason is Shaun White got gold last winter games and the US always does well in the Olympics (nostos.com). Shaun White is the US’s best contender because he is the defending gold medalist. Shaun white is the best because he always comes up with newer and better tricks. That is why the half-pipe is my favorite winter event. In conclusion, the Olympics are good because the make countries friend and the half-pipe is my favorite winter event in the Olympics because it is very entertaining to watch and it takes skill.
